Visiting Semovo South Manchester Explore our process

If you’re healthy and aged 18-45 years of age then you could become one of our dedicated sperm donors here at Semovo sperm bank in Manchester South. Some important information for donors to know before their first clinic visit to Semovo South Manchester:

Arriving at our Manchester South clinic

When you arrive, the team will be ready to greet you. Your first visit will include a series of tests to assess your suitability for donation. Rest assured, there's no need to worry - all tests will be carried out by clinical professionals and the appointment is expected to last approximately 30-40 minutes. Take a look below to see what’s involved. In the meantime, if you have any questions, you can always email our team at donate@semovo.co.uk.

First appointment preparation

A sperm assessment is performed in the first stages of the sperm donation process, as this allows us to check if you have the right quality sperm.

Once the sample has been produced, the Semovo laboratory team will look at your sperm under the microscope to assess the sperm count, movement and shape. For the best possible chance of a successful pregnancy, donated sperm has to be of high quality.

If your pass the sperm assessment, congratulations! The next steps are a counselling session and then a consultation with our doctor. Both of these sessions are via Zoom so you can do them from the comfort of your home.

Next you will attend the clinic for your heath screening tests. These will ensure you do not have anyu current infections and do not carry any common genetic conditions such as cystic fibrosis. Please have something to eat and drink before this appointment, to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Start donations

We kindly ask our donors to donate sperm once a week, for about six to twelve months, which equals around 20-30 donations. Your first sperm samples are kept in quarantine for three months. You’ll be re-screened, and if clear, these initial samples of sperm can then be made available for patient use. This step will be repeated numerous times throughout the process. People can now choose you as their donor!

In the UK, sperm donation is voluntary, and you will not be paid for your donations. Instead, you are allowed to receive compensation of up to £45 per clinic visit, which is the legal limit set by our regulator, the HFEA, to cover any expenses associated with donating, such as travelling to our sperm bank.

You’ll start to receive this after your medical screening and counselling, and will then get compensation every time you call in to donate. Each time you’ll be able to receive £35 of your expenses, with £10 being accrued, which can all be paid to you after your final screening when all your sperm is available for treatment use.

We are a highly trained team of experts with exceptional knowledge and experience who will guide you through every step of the donation process. With Semovo, you have the reassurance of first-class care from the moment you apply. We treat you as individuals and fully appreciate the motives behind your donation. We recognise the importance of encouraging donation so that the many people who need donor sperm have the opportunity to start a family. We offer numerous locations nationwide for your convenience, making the donation process as easy as possible. We continue to demonstrate our commitment to providing the highest quality care for sperm donors.

Our Manchester location was the first UK donor recruitment clinic to achieve the National Gamete Donation Trust Centre of Excellence status. If you would like to find out more about becoming a sperm donor with us, start your journey here online.
