INFORMED CONSENT: YOUNG MEN AND THE IMPLICATIONS OF SPERM DONATION

2nd May 2017

Sperm donation is undoubtedly a great thing to do. But some people believe that potential sperm donors – particularly young men such as students – simply don’t appreciate its implications, focusing instead on its compensation and altruistic reward.

Young men are a key target market for sperm donation for many clinics in the UK. But along with the promise of doing something great – and getting compensated for it too – comes the serious responsibility of informed consent.

Sperm donor counselling

At Semovo it’s fundamental to us that all our sperm donors – no matter what age they are – fully and completely understand all the issues and implications of sperm donation way before any sperm is actually donated.

It’s why counselling is a mandatory and essential part of the sperm donation process with us. It involves clearly and fully explaining the implications of sperm donation not just to you as a potential donor but also any partner or family member you wish to involve.

Counselling happens early on in the process, so you can decide if sperm donation is really right for you after you’ve learned the ‘full story’ about its psycho-social consequences now and in the future.

Student sperm donors: Specialist support for young people

Our focus on sperm donor psychological and emotional wellbeing ensures that our sperm donors are fully prepared. Prepared to learn that a child has been born using their sperm. Prepared for potential contact, if the child decides to find out who their donor is, when they turn 18.

This support is especially vital for all our younger sperm donors, who don’t have their own families or children yet. Younger people who donate sperm have to consider how a future partner may react to the existence of genetically-related children, particularly if they go on to have their own family.

With our specialist support –reflective of their unique needs and issues – younger sperm donors are prepared and can donate sperm no matter what the future may hold.

So although sperm donation is a wonderful altruistic act, at Semovo it’s not just the gratitude and compensation side of sperm donation that you’ll get. You’ll also get a lot to consider and a good talking to - so you can donate sperm with confidence.
