DOES SPERM DONATION AFFECT YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?

28th September 2017

What if we told you that being a sperm donor doesn’t mean having to give up what you love in life?

Or that you wouldn’t be hugely inconvenienced whilst you donate. Would you be willing to help change lives through sperm donation?

Making sperm donation work around you is what we do at Semovo. For men to donate sperm, we know it has to be a process that fits in with existing commitments such as work, leisure or family life - and doesn’t stop you enjoying yourself.

Here are some common myths about how being a sperm donor affects your everyday life, and the reality of sperm donation with Semovo, so you know what to expect:

Myth: You have to stop smoking and drinking

You don’t need to go cold turkey and quit smoking or drinking alcohol completely whilst you’re donating sperm, but we do ask you to try to maintain a healthy lifestyle between donations. Things such as alcohol, cigarettes and drugs can all affect your sperm health, which we’ll see in your sample. It’ll mean your sample for that donation won’t be suitable for freezing, and we’ll need you to continue to donate to us for longer until we have a good enough supply of your sperm.

Myth: Sexual habits

You don’t need to change your sexual habits, but you’ll need to ensure you practise safe sex at all times with all sexual partners, and not put yourself at risk of STIs. You’ll be regularly screened for STIs during your time as a sperm donor.

Myth: You have to abstain from sex completely

Being a sperm donor doesn’t mean you have to stop having sex! What we need you to do is have a very short period of abstinence –by this we mean no ejaculation – in the 48 hours before every donation. It’s so your sperm count is optimal in your sample.

Myth: Applying to be a sperm donor means lots of clinic visits

You do need to visit your Semovo clinic a few times during the application process, for things like your medical history review and health screening tests. But it’s probably not as often as you’d think – we can even carry out your counselling sessions online, so you don’t even have to leave home.

Myth: Sperm donation is inconvenient

Semovo is a unique sperm bank. We don’t expect you to travel to one central location, like other sperm banks do. We have multiple sperm donation clinics, so you can choose to donate sperm wherever is most convenient for you - not us. Our sperm donor clinic network means there’s a Semovo clinic near you in Manchester, Liverpool or Leeds.
