BEING CHOSEN AS SOMEONE’S SPERM DONOR: HOW YOU’RE MATCHED
7th December 2017It’s a great feeling to be chosen as someone’s sperm donor – but how does it happen?
Sperm donor matching is done by our dedicated Semovo team. People looking for donor sperm will tell us what they want in their ideal donor, we then browse our donor bank to find men who match the requirements.
Initial selection at this stage is based on basic characteristics – such as height, weight, hair, eye colour and profession.
We’ll typically aim to offer at least three sperm donors who initially fit the request.
Your sperm donor profile – making the right sperm donor choice
The next stage of the matching process is when your sperm donor profile becomes really important.
Your sperm donor profile has all the extra detailed information about you such as the pen portrait and goodwill message you wrote.
Your full profile is given to people if you’re a good initial match and they now want to know more about you.
Your profile helps them to understand a bit more about who you are, your motivations and personality. So they can decide out of all their initial matches who the right person is to help them create a family.
Your sperm is used – then what?
Once you’re chosen as a sperm donor, your sperm is sent directly to the recipient’s licensed clinic for her treatment.
But that’s not the end of the story - as the sperm donor you get to find out if treatment was successful.
You can request to find out if your recipient became pregnant, and if she had a baby. You can find out the year of birth of the baby and its gender.
Remember that every time your sperm is used, it’s recorded by us and by the HFEA – the UK fertility regulator - on its Register, including treatment outcome. This is so we can strictly control the 10-family limit – which means your sperm can only be used to create a maximum of 10 families.
